Now that we have got the obligatory political knock-about out of the way, perhaps I can make a small suggestion that might help promote Sutton and in the end make quite a lot of difference; namely that Sutton needs to increase its visibily. It''s in London, which is a great asset in itself, but, without a traditional London postcode, it and its facilities are often excluded from listings (such as those in Time Out" magazine), guide books about London attractions, property guides and eating out guides to name but a few. I try to help with this as much as I can, but, as an ordinary member of the public, there are limits to what I can do. Sutton (both town and borough) has got a lot going for it, but it tends to hide its light under a bushel.

Why does that man always look so smug?

I don't care whether he looks smug or not in that photo, if my suggestion above (Ms Hale's knockabout comment) gets picked up and acted upon, that would be good. (PS I'm starting to realise that sadly these comments are not like letters to the editor)

ResidentTony, you're right that Sutton hides it's light under a bushel. Much of that stems from a lack of ambition from the Council. High Street businesses would sooner locate in Croydon, Wimbledon, Richmond and Kingston where there is a more varied offering.

We need to have a clear idea of what we want Sutton to look like and then make that happen. Then we would have something for Time Out et al to cover. Unfortunately the Council tends to stand back and see who comes along.

To Paul Sculley and anyone else still following this article: I very much hear what you say. However, I don't think it is all the fault of the Council, although it no doubt could do quite a lot more. I think that businesses, individuals, trade associations etc need to bring what the area already has much more to the attention of key people and groups of people, rather than just the usual suspects. One small example: if you think a local restauarant is particularly good, tell "Time Out" or "The Good Food Guide" about it. Obviously, it's not just that - we need to get ourselves on the map much more. Sutton has been described as a hidden treasure.
