Police warning to keep jewellery safe from burglars after Sutton burglaries

Jewellery is being taken in one in three burglaries in Sutton
Police are warning residents to keep jewellery secure, after it emerged the personal items are being taken in one in three burglaries in Sutton.
In the 12 months to 21 June this year, there were 250 burglaries across the borough where jewellery was stolen.
Sutton crime prevention officer Duncan Harris said every household in the borough was likely to have some jewellery, from wedding and engagement rings through to watches and necklaces given as presents, or for ceremonial purposes.
Tips he gave on keeping jewellery secure include keeping a photographic library of jewellery, checking it was covered by insurance, marking it with UV marking kits, and putting them in a safe.
He also recommended locking doors and windows, installing timer switches to make it look like you are at home when you are out, and investing in an alarm system.
