Two marked police vehicles crashed into one another while responding to a reported break-in this afternoon.

A police car and police van collided at the junction of Overton Road and Worcester Road, Sutton, at about 2.30pm.

There were two officers in each vehicle and they are reported to be suffering from whiplash injuries.

London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade were at the scene.

It is understood no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved.

Bruce Clanford, who witnessed the incident, said: “I was driving down the road [Worcester Road] towards Cheam away from Sutton station and the police van came out of a junction going about 30 or 40 miles per hour. A police BMW was going down Worcester Road at the same time.

“Both were getting to the same point quickly and the van flew across the road into a bush and in to the lamppost. The BMW is completely smashed up."

A man who lives nearby said: “The front of the [police] car is quite badly damaged. The police man has a neck brace on and the fire brigade are trying to get him out.”

The circumstances of the collision will be fully investigated by specialist officers from the Met’s Traffic Command.
