The owner of a six-month old Labrador needed hospital treatment after defending her puppy from attack by a Staffordshire bull terrier.

Bracken, a chocolate brown Labrador, was playing with other dogs in Nonsuch Park, Epsom, on Saturday, January 14, at about 2.30pm when he was attacked.

His owner was able to prise the dog away from the terrified pup with the help of friends but was left with puncture wounds to her right hand after the dog bit her.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Joanna Clarke, said: "Bracken was happily playing with other dogs in the park while his owner supervised.

"When Bracken was called back by his owner, another dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier or similar breed attacked him.

"Bracken’s owner with the help of friends managed to break him free from the other dog but she sustained puncture wounds to her right hand as a result and the incident which has obviously left them both shaken and upset.

"I would like to speak with anyone who was in the park around this time as they may have vital information about this incident which will help us with our investigation and bring those responsible to justice."

Bracken was taken to the vet and his owner to Epsom Hospital for treatment for their injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference EP/12/207.
