A twenty strong group of yobs attacked a bus in Sutton Town Centre injuring a passenger as riots from neighbouring Croydon spilled into Sutton.

The youngsters waited with a pile of bricks at the bottom of St Nicholas Way for the double-decker bus before pummelling it with bricks and even bins.

At around midnight on August 8, the 164 bus from Morden came under attack by the rampaging group, smashing every window on board.

Despite the attack, the bus driver managed to run the gauntlet down St Nicholas Way and drop off his remaining passengers.

Eye Witness Mrs Rona Hunnisett, who was travelling on the bus, said it was a harrowing experience.

She said: "I saw a couple of girls get on the bus near Rosehill and I thought to myself they looked a bit young - maybe 13 to 14. "At the next stop they were joined by a couple of young men on their Blackberry's. They got off the bus and disappeared. "Then when the bus went round the corner at the bottom of St Nicholas Way they were there, along with about 15 others waiting for the bus with piles of ammunition. It was absolutely mindless."

Mrs Hunnisett described how at one point a car came under attack and had its window smashed before reversing down the road at speed to get away from the baying mob.

She said: "It was a terrifying, but the bus driver has to be praised for his actions. Despite all the windows being smashed he was absolutely fearless. Some of the shards of glass cut my leg and it was bleeding quite badly."

Bus Driver Dennis Holligan, 65 said: "I was absolutely terrified to be honest. I don't even know what I was thinking. After I manged to get away from them, I took my final passenger back to the train station to make sure she was safe."

"Where's superman when you need him."
