A man who served 12 years of a life sentence for killing his father in a drunken brawl died just one day after being sent back to prison, an inquest has heard.
Anthony Jones, from Sutton, received a life sentence in 1997 for murdering his father but was released on license in August 2008.
The main condition of this release was that the 46-year-old stayed away from alcohol as this was deemed to be the main reason behind his father’s death.
But on December 9, 2009, Mr Jones was found to have been abusing alcohol again, breaching the condition of his release and was sent back to High Down two days later.
Sharifa Warren, a prison nurse who was the first people to assess Mr Jones at High Down, told the court that he had “not yet come to terms with the death of his father”.
She said: “When I first met him in reception, he was shaking like a leaf and didn’t look well. He said he had killed his father in a drunken argument.”
Mark Kleaton, the night manager, said: “Mr Jones was very frail. He looked like he was in his early 50s but I think he was much older.”
Having been sent to a special cell to be observed, Mr Jones was found later that night by a guard doing a routine check.
Prison officer Barry Cansell said: “He was cold and had some foam-like substance around his mouth.”
Pathologist Dr Robert Chapman said: “The probable cause of death is coronary heart disease. I can’t exclude a fit or a seizure because it was a sudden collapse which can happen at any time.”
He was pronounced dead at just after midnight on December 12.
The inquest heard that the deceased had not been forgiven by his family for murdering his father because none of his relatives were willing to even identify his body.
Coroner Dr Michael Burgess, sitting at Woking Coroner’s Court, recorded a verdict of natural causes.
