UPDATE: Pensioner airlifted to hospital after motorbike collision

5:14pm Wednesday 8th September 2010

A pensioner was left fighting for her life after being hit by a motorbike as she crossed a road on Friday (September 3).

The 72-year-old woman was taken by air ambulance, which landed in the grounds of Bandon Hill Primary School, to the Royal London Hospital for emergency surgery.

The horrific incident happened at around 6pm in Sandy Lane South, in Wallington, right outside the school.

According to witnesses, the elderly pedestrian was trying to negotiate the road when a car stopped to allow her to cross.

But a motorbike, travelling behind the car, did not spot the woman and hit her in the midriff before her head hit the road “with some force”.

One eyewitness said: "Blood was absolutely pouring from the poor woman's head. She was lying on the road being tended to by some passers-by.

"One man, a paramedic, had turned her onto her side and had slowed the flow of blood before the ambulance arrived.

The off-duty paramedic, who was caught up in the traffic cause by the incident, was hailed as a hero by witnesses because of his quick-thinking.

Sutton police confirmed the woman’s head injuries were initially deemed as life-threatening but after treatment her condition was re-assessed as less serious.

As spokesman said: “Police officers closed roads so the incident could be dealt with. Medical staff later deemed incident to be non-life threatening.”

The motorcyclist, who passed a breath test, was visibly distraught by the roadside and was comforted by concerned witnesses and passers-by.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called just after 5.45pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Sandy Lane South between a motorbike and a pedestrian.

"The woman was taken by air ambulance to The Royal London Hospital."
