Paul Burstow dramatically holds Sutton and Cheam

Victorious Lib Dem Paul Burstow was congratulated by his wife Mary and supporters after winning the Sutton and Cheam seat for the fifth time.

The mood before the count was announced was tense, with both Mr Burstow and Conservative Philippa Stroud looking neck and neck.

But the final result threw Mr Burstow ahead by 1608 votes.

In his acceptance speech he thanked his supporters.

He said: “I would like to thank the people of Sutton and Cheam for placing their trust in me again and giving me the biggest vote the Lib Dem's have ever had in Sutton and Cheam.”

Speaking to the Sutton Guardian after his speech he said he would shortly be on the phone to party leader Nick Clegg to discuss the results coming in.

He said he had also been texting colleagues throughout the night to see how they had fared.

He said: “It seems we will have a very different Parliament from the one we have had for the last 13 years. For the first time we are going to have to listen to each other and work together.

“The turnout has been incredibly high. It is a testament to how both parties have worked their socks off today and galvanised exceptional turn out.”

Voter turnout in Sutton and Cheam was 48,678 out of 66,658 registered voters; a 73 per cent turn out.

I have nothing personally against Burstow as a person, but I can't believe we (well not me as I voted Cons) voted in the LibDems with a promise of increased council tax over the next 3 years, absolute callous waste of our money on schemes like straw buildings and high street bust ups, the Iceland bank fiasco, immigration pulling our schools into a tailspin....guess that's what people want more of. Pity, our childrens educations will suffer, our pocketbooks will suffer, our streets will flourish in alcoholic crime, and those who don't work will continue to wallow in unchecked and undeserved benefits.

I didn't know Paul Burstow was in charge of Council tax, I thought that was the Council. Bit of a general rant from theavenger which seems to overlook it is previous Tory policy on Grammar schools, the"Greenwich" judgement, unfunding of nursery education and school repairs, that created unfairness in schooling, likewise much of London's catering, construction and services industry rely on immigration to run at a profit, so quite frankly Tory business (and voters) have as much immigration as suits them. I wonder if Ms Stroud views on other people caught up with her at the last minute.

If Burstow is a LibDem and we have a LibDem run council then yes, when you vote for a LibDem canidate you are approving of the local council to be LibDem and all of their waste. As far as immigration and what we need, no we don't need anymore people here to do jobs that people here can already do. I don't need my chids school to be over run with those who refuse to speak English as what has happened to many Sutton schools in the past 2 years. I know first hand what has happened to our schools with non-English speaking children coming in and requiring our tax money to teach them "English as a 2nd language" because I work in the school system and I have seen what happens in that circumstance. But true, that is a rant and may be going off the subject but still stands that a vote for a LibDem candidate is a vote for this council and it's policies and problems. The local MP is a voice for us in the council as well as parliament. As you can see with such a narrow vote that barely got LibDems into Sutton, many people will agree with my "rants". But, the liberal thinking hippies and their greenie ideas are what makes this country such a pitiful place to live and we give a true heartfelt thanks for that. For those of us hard working classes with children, it's us who will suffer the most for bad decisions. But alas, if someone wins fair enough, even though Brown doesn't believe this. It's a semi-democracy still until ID cards and microchips are forced upon us, but that's another rant. I understand this isn't a LibDem thing but I do like a rant, being a taxpayer who wants to see this government changed for the better instead being sold to Europe while we sit by like dumb chumps. I voted Cons to get rid of Brown and his policies that will continutally increase socialism at the cost of every British person, and to clean up our complacient council and it's waste, not a personal vote against Burstow the man. The national LibDem vote proves many people believe the LibDems are a joke and love raising taxes sky high with very little return to the resident when they have local power. Can't deny our council tax is one of the highest in London (compared to that of much cheaper and better kept Cons councils) while our streets are dirty, chavs run riot, and more and more it's turning into a dumping ground for all sorts . **** up your ears and just listen around you. And to think how strong and wonderful Britian used to be. Britian has lost it's identity to socialism. And this is why I along with millions "rant". Every seat lost is a vote for Gordon to continue his destruction.

And I quote:-

'The local MP is a voice for us in the council as well as parliament'

Unquote From:-'The Avengers'

I don't think so.......Paul Burstow has no direct sway over the local-Council and its decisions. They are a separate 'entity' to him. Hence two separate voting-papers to place your crosses on.

@theavengers You'd be better off if you stopped digging. The more you say, the more complete misconceptions you reveal.

I'm glad to see Paul Burstow continuing in Sutton & Cheam. Apart from the fact I think he's a good MP (until late last year, I'd lived in Sutton for 15 years) it's also a blessing that he kept Philippa Stroud out. I really don't want to see candidates backed by the Centre for Social Justice winning any constituency. Leave the creationist bilge to the American religious right.
