Rubbish collection, libraries and schools in Sutton have been affected by the two-day council worker strike which more than 200 council staff from the borough are participating in.

A spokesman for Sutton Council confirmed that Amy Johnson primary school in Mollinson Drive, Wallington, and Wandle Valley school in Welbeck Road, Carshalton, will be shut today and tomorrow.

He said some classes at the Thomas Wall Nursery in Robin Hood Lane, Green Wrythe primary school in Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton, Tweeddale Primary, in Tweeddale Road, Carshalton and Sherwood Park Secondary School in Streeters Lane, Wallington, will be closed for either one or both days of the strike.

Carshalton, Cheam, Wallington and the Ridge Road libraries will also be closed both days, he said.

Beddington library will shut tomorrow at 1pm.

He said household waste and recycling materials will not be collected for the two days of the action.

Residents whose brown-wheeled bin waste is collected on Wednesdays or Thursdays will have it collected next week instead, along with additional rubbish bags.

This week there will be alternative arrangements for green wheeled bin and glass collections. Households whose collection day is Wednesday will now have their recycling picked up this Friday while Thursday collections will now take place this Saturday.

"We regret any inconvenience to residents but will be using additional staff from Friday to catch up on any backlog and return to a normal service as soon as possible," he added.

While useful info from a services point of view, this story would be much more interesting if it addressed *why* 200 council workers are going on strike.

I assume they don't just fancy a couple of days of (without pay) unless someone knows otherwise.

Interesting to see that the £35 a year green waste bags were emptied this morning. I saw a dust cart with 3 staff searching for a green waste bag to empty, yet rubbish will be left for another week!!

It's a shame Sutton Council couldn't have had the 'news' posted on their website earlier. At 11.30am today there was still nothing showing apart from 5 libraries closed!

I have not had a pay increase this year from my employer, and am finding times as hard as no doubt everyone else in the country is in the current credit crunch climate. I still however pay my inflated Council Tax in order to have my household waste collected.
As this has NOT been collected this week, can I now go "on strike" with making the next monthly payment ???? I think I know the answer to this question....

I agree with Sue from Worcester Park.A lot of people who work in the private sector have not had wage rises, in some cases for years.I would be interested to know what Sutton Council is going to do with the wages they will not have to pay for the 2 days - around £15K based on average wages?

My green recycling bin was 'missed' on Tuesday morning even though it is at the front of my property and put out the night before!. I waited and then called the Council to be told that the waste-collectors are on strike for 2 days hence it won't be collected any time soon.

Following the strike the council are using extra staff to clear any backlog from green bins. But they will leave two fifths of residences with unemptied brown bins for two weeks.Obviously there will be maggot infestations as a result. Whoever decided to concentrate resources on the dry goods instead of household waste should be ashamed for not prioritising the needs of residents.
