Heads of Sutton Council are awarding themselves pay rises of up to £10,000 a year while hitting householders with a council tax rise above the rate of inflation.

The town hall faces a huge backlash from residents and workers after agreeing to increase the salary of its strategic directors by 11 per cent to £105,000.

If there’s cash left over it should be given back to hard-working families footing the bill, not handed to high-earning fat cats.”

TaxPayers' Alliance

The "fat cat" pay, which was approved by executive councillors on Monday night, will cost taxpayers £384,000 over three years. It means chief officers now earn more than ministers.

The council claims performance-linked pay rises are needed to lure the best candidates when outer london boroughs offer bigger salaries.

But the largesse has infuriated residents, with the average Band D bill increasing by £42.39 to £1,418, and free garden waste collection services ending.

The cost of the salary awards would pay for garden waste to be collected from 11,000 homes for a year.

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "These pay rises are obscene. Taxpayers are struggling under the burden of record council tax bills, services are struggling, and yet Sutton Council can build up already-high executive salaries.

"Taxpayers want their money spent on essential services. If there's cash left over it should be given back to hard-working families footing the bill, not handed to high-earning fat cats."

Councillor Tony Shields, deputy opposition leader, said: "A 10-grand-a-year increase is the final insult to taxpayers struggling to make ends meet while smirking Lib Dems congratulate themselves for whacking up council tax yet again.

"Councillor John Drage, lead member for resources, obviously went to the sheriff of Nottingham school of finance, as he is fleecing the poor to pay the already well-off."

The double-figure pay rise is much higher than the consumer price index, the Government's preferred measure of inflation, which is at 2.2 per cent.

It is also in stark contrast to figures for most public sector workers. Police, teachers, civil servants and nurses are expecting pay increases below 2.32 per cent.

Coun Drage said salaries of the council's 80 senior managers were rising by about four per cent on average, despite some increases above 10 per cent. The awards amount to an extra three pence a week on average household bills.

"This performance-related increase will bring our senior manager group more in line with the outer London council average, as we pay up to 25 per cent less than our neighbours," he said.

"One way we can improve, especially when we get such a poor Government grant, compared with other councils, is by employing the best people in key positions. We can't attract and retain the best staff if the pay on offer is below other organisations."

How can this be justified when my niece has not even been offerred a secondary school place in the borough, even though 6 choices were put on the form. If they can't offer school places to sutton residents then clearly more money should be spent on education in the borough to ensure that it's own children receive an education. This extra £10k a year they are recieving would fund a place for my neice at private sutton high !!!

I'd like to see a better pay increase for the council workers, over their leaders....What an insult to the workers and council tax payers to make a simplistic argument to justify their UNBELIEVABLE pay increase!!

Can we see a financial break down on how they are going to fund this pay increase? Also can Sutton Council put forward to the residents of this Borough why they think they deserve such a pay-rise? I would be very interested.

Awarding the salaries is fine if we can have faith that while we continue to employ the best those poor performing officers are managed correctly and out of the business if they are not up to scratch. It is much more likely that they will get early retirement or even redundancy that being dealt with for their own lack of comptence. If the council wants to pay private sector wages then it needs to adopt private sector methods. For example pension provision should be reviewed at this level. All private sector companiues have now dropped a final salary scheme when will local authorities do it for new posts of over £100k?

If you completed the Council consultation on their website, you would have seen that they were putting aside about £250,000 aside to attract the best staff. This lot are as bad as that thief Livingstone. We get the Council we deserve - if you voted for them, you cannot complain.

Could someone explain to me what exactly a "strategic director" is? It's sounds like a stupid made up job like "sales executive" (cold call rep) or "sanitary engineer" (toilet cleaner) which actually disguise the nature of the job. Mind you, we could do with a sanitary engineer to sort out Sutton Council as they're an absolute shower of ****.

The councillors pay rise is totally unjustified, bearing in mind their pension goes up with it. Government has pegged all increases to 2
-2.5%, well below inflation rate, so they are NOT entitled to this extra salary. On top of that, the council tax has gone up way above inflation, so if they have this extra £348,00, they can use it to lower our council tax. Also, I object to paying £35 for garden collection when we ALREADY pay for it.

Absolutely disgusting... Our council tax has gone up over £70 a year in real terms if you factor in the charges for garden waste collection. They say that to attract quality staff they have to pay them a top wage - I take it then we haven't got the quality people in place at the moment then... I reckon that if this new pay scheme goes ahead then they should have to re-applying for their jobs - after all we want to attract the right quality of people to the job...
