MPs in Sutton have reacted to the news of the snap election by saying they are both prepared to fight to keep their seat.

Tom Brake and Paul Scully both confirmed they will stand again in the second election in two years on 8 June.

Mr Brake won the Carshalton and Wallington seat in 2015 with 34.9 per cent of the vote and said he hopes to be backed again.

The Liberal Democrat MP said: “It has been a great honour to serve local residents and I hope they will put their trust in me again.”

Mr Brake won the seat by just over 1,000 votes in 2015, and has said his campaign will be based around Brexit.

He added: “The future of the critical hospital services at St Helier, as well as the damage of a hard Brexit, would do to British jobs and families, will be at the heart of my campaign.

Paul Scully, who has been vocal in his criticism of the bin crisis in Sutton, will also be standing for re-election.

The Tory MP won the Sutton and Cheam constituency with 41.5 per cent of the vote, 20,732 votes in 2015.

Mr Scully said: “I will be standing again. There is a real opportunity here with the French and German elections for Britain to get real strong leadership that will take us forward with negotiations.

“My fear is the Lib Dems will Feed of uncertainty rather than looking forward.

“It will be a tough fight. I will be looking at the same issues as last time, protecting local health care and getting the new secondary school built.

“I am looking forward to getting back out, as an MP you get involved with many different subjects but I am looking forward to getting back outside and talking to the people on my doorstep.”
