Schoolchildren's lives are being put at risk "daily" as Sutton Council delays installing safety signs, the headteacher has said.

Green Wrythe Primary, which has a higher share of children with learning difficulties, was told it was in line for traffic-calming measures outside the school in February 2016, but since then nothing.

Anne Claxon, headteacher at the school, said: “We are very disappointed that we have heard nothing more about traffic calming measures for the roads by our school. The safety of out children and their families is paramount.

“The complete lack of signage and traffic calming measures means their safety is at risk daily.”

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “The work to Green Wrythe Lane is focused on improving pedestrian footpaths and cycling, as well as the signs and road markings mentioned.”

“The resources for this project comes through funding from TfL, which is part of a larger pot for borough-wide projects from April 2016 to March 2017.”

“The plans for Green Wrythe Lane started in September as resources from other projects had to be moved around to start work in the area.”

“The consultation period is underway with local residents. The final improvements will be made once we have received feedback from people in the area.”

“We would again like to thank Green Wrythe Primary School and local residents for their patience during the consultation process.”
