Figures have been released showing which London boroughs are happiest and most miserable – and it seems residents of one south-west London area have more to smile about than most.

Richmond is ranked as the second happiest borough in the capital in the personal wellbeing report from the Office for National Statistics.

A “large sample of adults” were asked to score how happy they were feeling overall and responded on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 was “not at all” and 10 was “completely”.

Richmond’s score is 7.65, above the London average of 7.41 and just below top-ranked Redbridge’s rating of 7.67.

Kingston is sixth on the happiness scale out of the 32 boroughs, with Merton in a mid-table 13th and Wandsworth in 18th.

Sutton and Croydon are low down the list, with the former in 24th place and the latter ranked the fifth unhappiest borough.

The most miserable borough of all is Greenwich, according to the stats.

People living in Richmond, Merton, Kingston and Croydon had low levels of satisfaction compared to elsewhere.

Richmond (4th) and Kingston (7th) rank highly in the section where residents were asked “to what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?”

Nationally, the figures show those living in rural areas are most satisfied with life while those in London report the highest levels of anxiety.
