Three tiny fox cubs have defied the odds to survive.

Staff at Riverside Animal Centre had not expected the adorable trio to pull through after they were found freezing and covered in fly eggs in late March – with their mother nowhere in to be seen.

But the cubs – named Damon, Stefan and Elena by staff at the Beddington charity – are now fighting back to fitness after being warmed up, hydrated and cleaned of the eggs by vets.

The cubs are set to be released into the wild in the summer after their recovery is complete.

Ted Burden, founder of the Riverside Animal Centre, said: “The three cubs are still with us and are doing well. Obviously they a little older now, are being weaned and are in a small pen.

“They will remain with us until the middle to late summer and their release will be organised at the same time as they would naturally disperse from their parents in the wild.”

The cubs are currently sporting dark brown fur, which will develop into their recognisable red coats as they grow older.

Mr Burden said: “Fox cubs are always born chocolate brown and they get their more familiar coat as they begin to wean from four-to-five weeks onwards.”
