The latest death of a Wandsworth Prison inmate accused of murder raises more questions about the conditions in the notorious lock-up.

Jonathan Palmer of Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton, was due to appear at the Old Bailey last Tuesday, along with Stuart Palmer, 28, of Kew Bridge Road, Brentford, and their half-brother Jason Lewin, 33, of Glenthorpe Road, Morden.

From July: Why are so many men dying inside Wandsworth Prison?

But Jonathan died in custody before he and his two brothers were due to go on trial accused of murdering Tooting pensioner Peter Lee in June.

The Ministry of Justice said Jonathan was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday, November 19 and staff and paramedics attempted resuscitation unsuccessfully.

The death can now be reported after this newspaper successfully challenged a contempt of court order banning the publication of his name, his death and the fact he was a co-defendant in an upcoming murder trial.

Old Bailey Judge John Bevan lifted the reporting restrictions on Monday after a submission from this newspaper.

Criminal justice campaigners have claimed "overcrowded, understaffed" conditions at Wandsworth Prison are leading to deaths in custody - some of whom are innocent men waiting for a trial.

There have been 13 deaths at Wandsworth prison since January 2014 – half from suspected suicide.

A further four deaths were believed to be from natural causes, one homicide and two are under investigation.

It is not yet known how Jonathan died.

A prison service spokesperson said: "HMP Wandsworth prisoner Jonathan Palmer was found unresponsive in his cell on 19 November.

"Staff and paramedics attempted CPR but he was pronounced dead around 3pm.

"As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent prisons and probation ombudsman."

A trial date is yet to be set for Stuart Palmer and Jason Lewin, who denied murder and aggravated burglary during their appearance in court on Friday, August 21. Jonathan had also denied the same charges.
