"Something has to be done, otherwise there will be a death on their hands."

Those were the words of locum pharmacist Jayshree Karve, after a child was hit by a car on the pedestrian crossing outside her workplace in London Road this afternoon.

London Ambulance Services were called and the child was taken to St Helier hospital with minor injuries.

But Ms Karve said the situtation could have been a lot worse.

She said: "I was dispensing when I heard a scream. One of my staff had just gone out to the doctor, and I thought it was them.

"With the new modifications they have made to the crossing, there is no clear indication where to cross. There are no lights."

The crossing is paved over for pedestrians, but has no traffic lights indicating when to cross.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said: "We were called at 4.05pm to a road traffic accident in London Road, Wallington. We sent an ambulance crew to the scene and we treated one patient at the scene, before taking them to St Helier, without blue lights."
