An Epsom-based band will be heading to Canada to perform in front of 25,000 festival-goers after winning the UK finals of an international music competition.

Five-piece Brightlight City will jet off to perform at the Envol et Macadam Festival in Quebec City in September where they will play alongside a host of US rockers and headliners Rise Against.

The band - Jamie Giarraputo (vocals), Justin Giarraputo (guitar/vocals), Jono Staunton (guitar), all from Epsom, Ben Bell, (drums), from Stoneleigh and Dan Stubberfield (bass) from Carshalton - beat four other bands to win Planetrox UK, a worldwide contest to find the best new bands and expose them to a wider international audience.

Mr Bell said: "I can honestly say that this achievement is the proudest in my life so far.

"When we found out we had won it was amazing - and proved all the passion and hard work we have put into the band over the years has paid off."

Brightlight City- who describe their sound as a mix of British punk, with a touch of the Seattle sound, a dash of pop, a few scoops of rock and a seasoning of hardcore - started writing and recording in their current line-up back in 2013.

Since then they have performed throughout the UK and have built up a strong and loyal fanbase on social media.

Their debut EP Breaking Straight Lines was released in 2014 and in May this year was followed by their second EP, Adventures.

Next week the band returns to Stakeout Studios in Hampton Court to record their debut album.

On their four-day all-expenses paid trip to Canada the band will be joined by a UK-based manager who will help promote Brightlight City before a global audience.

Mr Bell said: "It is our first appearance outside of the UK and easily the biggest performance we will have ever given.

"It is amazing to be taking what we love to as whole new audience on the other side of the world."

See Brightlight City in London during their upcoming tour at the O2 Islington Academy on September 4 and at the Fighting Cocks, Kingston, on November 6.
