Good sportsmanship cost a tutu wearing vicar first-place during a gruelling 10k run.

The Rev Kevin Lewis, 38, of Bishop Andrewes' Church, in St Helier, came second out of 475 runners at the Grim Beast in the East earlier this month but missed out on first place by just four seconds.

Mr Lewis took on the challenge near Swanley, in Kent, on Saturday, May 9, while wearing a tutu on behalf of Young Epilepsy, completing the course in 44 minutes and 51 seconds.

The gruelling circuit took place at a wet and muddy motor cross track that pushed the running-enthusiast to his limit.

But the competitive vicar said it was ironic that it was his sportsmanship, rather than exhaustion, that cost him the race.

He said: "It was a bit frustrating that it was good sportsmanship that cost me the race.

"The man who beat me was going the wrong way at a fork in the road and me and a steward had to call him back over.

"I waited for him because I thought it would be fair, but I didn't expect him to beat me.

"In the end though it was all a bit of fun for charity and I expect the photographs of me in the tutu will stop me gloating and will keep me humble."
