Sutton Schools Sports Partnership invited pupils from eight schools to engage in a mini-Paralympic games aimed at encouraging disabled children to realise they can engage in competitive sport.

The I Can Games, held at Carshalton Boys Sports College Sports Hall on April 29, was opened by Paralympics track and road cyclist Shaun McKeown.

Born with cerebral palsy, which affects the left-hand side of his body, Mr McKeown won silver in the men’s individual pursuit at the London 2012 Paralympics’ Games.

About 100 children from Carew Academy, Manor Park, Wandle, Foresters, the Link, Green Wrythe, Mus-champ and Rushy Meadow took part in sports such as boccia, basketball, tennis and football.

Suzy Brooks, primary sport development officer of Sutton Schools Sport Partnership, said: “Through sport, children can make friends as well as have a sense of achievement and of belonging.”

She said she felt privileged of being able to support young people in Sutton and help them to be their best. She added: “Sport is a totally inclusive activity.

“Everyone has the possibility to achieve something."
