An estimated 1,000 visitors attend Sutton's Community Safety Day for Older People.

The event was held at the Europa Gallery in the central library, Sutton, on Thursday, February 26.

The initiative was organised by Sutton Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) and the Safer Sutton Partnership Service (SSPS) which manage the borough's community safety services.

During the day Sutton mayor Councillor Arthur Hookway spent about 75 minutes welcoming the 34 organisations that took part.

An exhibition to mark the partnership's 10th anniversary was also on display.

In his opening address, Coun Hookway it was "a wonderful example of statutory, voluntary and charitable organisations coming together to help older residents".

SNW chairman Heather Shaw said: "I was thrilled to see that the mayor made a point of talking to all the stallholders.

"He seemed to know everyone".

SSPS manager Glenn Phillips added: "All participants told us that they wanted to be part of a similar event next year and we've already started to make plans to make this happen."
