An estate honoured with a gold pillar box, which recognises the Paralympic exploits of local legend David Weir, is set to lose its post office.

The branch moved inside the Mollison Drive Co-operative supermarket in 2013, but, following a decision from the store’s management, will be forced to find a new retail partner after being told it needs to be out by April 6.

The closure has been described as a loss to the Roundshaw area by post office user Michael Higgens, who said it attracted people into the parade of shops. Losing this, he said, could hurt other businesses.

Mr Higgens said: “It’s the only Post Office on the whole estate.

“They shut the post office in Wallington and now this. It is such a shame and lots of older people up here use it.

“I just feel sorry for those people.”

He said that when he queued for the post office he would often see many of the same faces. These people would use it to collect various benefits, make payments, or just do the sort of things you do at a post office.

He said: “Closing the post office here will not only hurt residents but also hurt the shops.”

A Post Office spokesman confirmed the Co-operative Group had given them notice that they would no longer be operating the Roundshaw post office branch from April 6, 2015.

He said: “Customers should be assured that the post office is committed to maintaining post office services to customers in Sutton and will work hard to ensure this.

“We will be seeking alternative premises for the post office so any local retailers interested in this business opportunity should contact us on 08452 668790 or email NTquestions@postoffice.
