Police are still hunting for two men after a dramatic chase through the streets of Sutton and Croydon yesterday.

Four suspected jewel thieves garden-hopped their way through Plough Lane in Wallington, before splitting up and leading police in two separate pursuits.

Officers chased three of the men as they dashed towards nearby Stafford Road, with police reporting the fourth man headed north.

Two of the men jumped in a car just off Plough Lane, and were pursued by a Metropolitan Police helicopter and dog unit as they motored towards Croydon Road.

The other man ran into The Chase and was last seen at the junction with Central Avenue.

When the two men in the car reached the A23 they abandoned the vehicle at the junction with Dean Lane, by Hooley in Surrey, where the Metropolitan Police helicopter spotted them hiding.

Two men were arrested by officers on the ground at 3.20pm, and various items of jewellery seized.

The chase began shortly after 2.55pm, when a Plough Lane resident called 999 to say they believed a house was being broken into in their road.

When police arrived the men were leaving and had just shut the front door. On realising officers were heading their way, the men tried and failed to re-enter the house.

A 24-year-old man was arrested for burglary and dangerous driving, and after further enquiries was arrested on suspicion of a burglary in Newham on January 6.

Police also arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of burglary.

They are still hunting for the other two men.
