Times Square in Sutton High Street was evacuated today amid fears a gas leak could trigger an explosion.
The shoppers were led from the building after the alarm was raised by security staff at 12.51pm today, Monday, January 12.
Officers from Sutton police were on a hand to help with the security operation.
A spokesman said: "We were called at 12.51pm by security staff at Times Square after there was concern about a gas leak or a smell of gas.
"The gas board was called and investigated while the place was evacuated.
"Everybody gathered outside in the high street."
The shopping centre was declared safe at 2.21pm and shoppers were allowed by in.
Officers role during the safety scare was to help with the evacuation and ensure others did not get into the building during the incident.
