Sutton Street Pastors has promised to step up patrols in the Carshalton area after numerous parents raised concerns about safety following Saturday's attack.

MP for Carshalton and Wallington has been contacted by those suggesting adults band together to patrol the area, or form an "American style Guardian Angels system" and is looking for support under the Twitter handle @CarshaltonAngel.

Mr Brake has instead suggested those concerned approach the Street Pastors, who work with Sutton police to help keep crime in Sutton town centre down.

Mr Brake said: "I welcome the willingness of the community to come together and help make our streets safer and I hope this will be done through established models such as the Street Pastors scheme who work closely with the police to provide hi-visibility patrols.

"It has to be structured and if done through that way they will have access to communication contacts and I am sure it will work effectively."

Mr Brake has written to both the borough commander David Snelling at Sutton police and Councillor Ruth Dombey, leader of Sutton Council, to call for joint action on the project.

Mark Tomlinson, Sutton Street Pastors coordinator promised his group would be in the area during this period of heightened tension.
