A couple in their 80’s have been left shaken after burglars broke into their house and stole priceless jewellery.

The husband and wife heard the doorbell ring at around 9.30pm on Friday, but decided to ignore it because they were lying in bed.

After hearing noises the 88-year-old man came downstairs to find the burglars had smashed through his rear patio door, before making their way into the living room.

Sutton police report there were three to four burglars who stole jewellery that had belonged to the woman’s late mother.

They also stole a three stone diamond and gold engagement band, an 18ct gold wedding ring, and a diamond necklace, as well as a 9ct gold opal butterfly brooch, a 9ct gold locket, a ruby and diamond pendant, and plain gold rings.

The burglars were said to have been wearing hoods and had scarves wrapped around their faces.

They left without harming the couple.

The man and his 85-year-old wife live in Sprucedale Gardens, in Wallington, and the burglars are reported to have left by jumping over a fence into Ambrey Way.

A silver car was parked outside the house at the time.
