Throughout November ceremonies will be held across Sutton to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The Sutton Guardian has compiled a full list of events taking place as the borough pays it respects to those who gave up so much:​

WREATH LAYING: A service of remembrance in honour of those who gave their lives, will take place at the Carshalton War Memorial on Sunday November 9.
Council leader Ruth Dombey and Sutton mayor Councillor Arthur Hookway will lay wreaths.

PAY RESPECTS: A minute’s silence will take place in Sutton High Street to mark the anniversary of the end of the war. Coun Dombey and Coun Hookway will be there, alongside council chief executive Niall Bolger.

FIRST WORLD WAR EXHIBITION: Sutton Council is opening up its archives to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The exhibition will offer original documents and photographs from the period.
People visiting the centre will also be able to learn about the borough’s objectors to the war. The exhibition falls into a programme of events to commemorate the conflict, including poetry readings and performances based on letters and diaries.

A SOLDIER’S STORY: A dramatised presentation will of Henry Williamson, a soldier in the First World War who went on to become a novelist and nature writer. 
The writer had a strong association with Sutton as his maternal grandparents lived in Cavendish Road.  Mr Williamson wrote the series A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight. In the books he fictionalises Carshalton, with his plots unravelling in the village of Cross Aulton.

AUTHOR’S TALE: Author Elizabeth Speller will be in Sutton to talk about her novel At Break of Day that tells the story of four men fighting in the Battle of the Somme.

ON DISPLAY: A commemorative exhibition will tell the story of the events that led Britain to war in 1914. Artefacts from the conflict, including posters from the era, will be on display throughout the exhibition.
