Labour party parliamentary candidate for Sutton and Cheam Emily Brothers, received a rapturous applause after voicing her support for the NHS at the party's annual conference in Manchester.

She made her speech in the health and social care debate this afternoon to her party's top brass.

Ms Brothers, who is blind, shared a personal story of when she was supported by the NHS in her childhood.

She said: "I recall lying in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in my home city of Liverpool - operation after operation, knowing that the battle against glaucoma was being lost.

"However, even at that early age, I understood that the NHS was on my side.

"It is that personal experience that has shaped my commitment to excellence in care for all, free at the point of delivery."

Ms Brothers is hoping to take the seat from incumbent Liberal Democrat Paul Burstow in next May's general election.
