Paul Burstow MP is bracing himself for one of the biggest paw-litical battles of his career, with his dog Indy set to take part in the Westminster Dog of the Year competition.

Five-year-old labrador, border collie cross Indy, will go toe-to-toe with other parliament pooches, to be judged on appearance, good deeds, and devotion to his owner.

Mr Burstow’s wife Mary, who is the councillor for Cheam, said: "Indy is a character, and has played up a bit over the years, but he has seen the light now.

"I think he has a great chance of winning this competition- as far as dogs go, Indy has it all."

Sutton Heath MP and former Education Secretary Michael Gove has entered his dog Snowy into the competition.

Coun Burstow continued: "I think Indy will be able to give Snowy some very handy tips and tricks on how to be a good dog.

"I think the pair will get on really well."

Sutton Coldfield MP and former Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell, who has spent the last couple of years mired in the 'plebgate' scandal, has also entered his dog Scarlet into the running.

The competition take places on October 23, at Victoria Tower Gardens near Westminster.

In the spirit of democracy the winning pet will be decided through a public vote.
