A time capsule was buried at Trickett House sheltered housing this afternoon to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sutton Housing Society.

Sutton Housing Society was set up in 1964 with the aim to providing supported housing to local people in need, and the anniversary coincided with the official opening of a new head office at Pat Shaw House, Ventnor Road.

The time capsule was filled with a poppy and a copy of ‘In Flanders Fields’ to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI, a mobile phone to give an indication of modern day technology and a recent copy of The Sutton Guardian.

Sutton Housing Society residents were also invited to suggest items that should be placed in the time capsule, with the three winners being honoured at the event.

Jeff Martin, who lives at Cloverdale Court on Stanley Park Road, chose to put in information about what the scheme offers to people at the moment.

Suzanna Hill, who resides at Griffiths Close in Worcester Park, wrote a piece called ‘A Day in the Life of a Pensioner’, and Trickett House resident Dot Allen put in ‘The History of Sutton Housing Society’, which she wrote herself.

Chief executive Chris Turton placed the capsule into the ground, alongside scheme manager Noel Rowland, He said: "We wanted to do something to mark 50 years service, particularly as we are still in touch with several founder members of the company.

"It is a local business aimed at local people."
