The death of a five-month-old baby girl this morning is being treated as suspicious, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Police officers from the Specialist Child Abuse investigation team were called to Glastonbury Road, St Helier at 7.30am, by the London Ambulance Service.

The little girl was taken to 'a south London hospital' where she later died.

She has been identified and next of kin notified. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police, said: "The postmortem will be held in due course.

"We won't be naming the baby.

"The incident is being treated as suspicious at this stage.

"No arrests have been made and our investigations continue."

It is understood the emergency vehicles left the scene at around 10.30am and by lunchtime two officers remained stationed outside the property, in possession of the keys, to stop anybody from attempting to enter the address.

The Sutton Guardian understands the house was occupied by a young mother with three children.

Neighbours gathered outside the Glastonbury Road home this morning said the emergency vehicles arrived 'about school time' although there was disagreement as to what cars, and how many, were present, pointing to the fluid nature of the situation.

Discrepancies between witness accounts centred on the number of police and ambulance vehicles outside the house. Some put it at two police cars, another one. Ambulance numbers ranged from none to two.

One witness, who asked not to be named, said she saw 'a lot of neighbours outside the address talking' another said that officers had been 'outside ever since' the incident broke.
