The husband of a beloved school governor who has died after a long battle with breast and hip cancer, has paid tribute to his ‘remarkable’ wife who ‘went to great efforts to help other people.’

Alison Myerscough, 61, was the chair of governors at Wallington High School for Girls and Barrow Hedges Primary School in Carshalton, and also ran a weekly toddlers group at Wallington Methodist Church.

She died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton on Friday afternoon with her family around her.

Mrs Myerscough lived with her husband Colin in Carshalton, and had two children who are now studying at university.

She was diagnosed with breast and hip cancer back in October 2012.

Things had largely returned to normal a few months later, but her health began to deteriorate around three months ago.

Mr Mysercough, 67, said: "She was a remarkable woman, very talented, and made great efforts to help other people.

"She supported the idea of community.

"It is sad news to me, and sad news to a lot of other people."

In a letter to parents to make them aware of the news, Wallington High headteacher Jane Burton, said: "Alison was absolutely dedicated to ensuring that students at Wallington Girls received the very best educational experience that could be offered.

"She was tireless in ensuring this happened.

"Alison would always be in attendance at school events, she particularly enjoyed music concerts and school productions, and was willing to support our school in any way she could."

Mrs Myerscough joined the governing body of Barrow Hedges around eighteen years ago, and became chair of governors six years later.

Headteacher Louise Wood, said: "Alison loved to join us in school and see the children at work and at play.

"She would always be in attendance at school events, and especially enjoyed our musical concerts and productions.

"On governors’ days, Alison would always be found chatting to the children and staff and helping in any way she could.

"Alison gave her life to working within the community, as well as other work in local organisations."

Mrs Myerscough's funeral will take place at the St John's Church in Belmont on Monday, September 22.
