A clinic for women in the early stages of pregnancy has been set up at St Anthony's Hospital in Cheam.

The Early Pregnancy Clinic will be held on Saturday mornings for women in their first trimester - the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

It will be led by consultant gynaecologist Pandelis Athanasias.

Mr Athanasias said: "The aim of this clinic is to provide an early pregnancy assessment for women.

"Women can attend the clinic if they have symptoms or if they just need reassurance. The most common problems in early pregnancy include vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal pain and hyperemesis or severe morning sickness - as experienced by the Duchess of Cambridge last year."

The clinic will include an ultrasound scan by a consultant, pregnancy test and blood pressure check. A detailed report of the scan findings will be supplied.

There will also be advice given about diet, exercise and weight gain in pregnancy, as well as information about which medication to avoid.

Mr Athanasias added: "The advantage for women attending this clinic is they will receive reassurance that all is well.

"A scan by a consultant in early pregnancy will provide an early diagnosis of unfortunate events as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

"Particularly for women with previous miscarriages, studies prove that regular appointments with scans in the first trimester can improve the outcome of the current pregnancy. "
