The Olympic torch arrives in Lambeth a week today as it nears the end of its 8,000 mile journey across the British Isles.

The torch will leave Camden early in the morning on July 26, day 69 of the 70-day relay, reaching Lambeth at 12.10pm at the junction of Denmark Hill and Coldharbour Lane.

Crowds are expected to greet the flame as it arrives on Windrush Square, Brixton, at approximately 12.30pm. The relay will then move down Acre Lane and Clapham Park Road, before continuing down Long Road and into Cedars Road at about 1pm, before going into Wandsworth.

Those anxious about the torch’s progress through Lambeth will have their worries eased by the presence of seasoned runners in the line-up.

Among those carrying the flame will be Richard Fullbrook, 47, who has run more than 135 marathons while raising money for charity Help for Heroes and Laura Tollerton, 27, who has run several races in support of cancer charities.

Streatham resident Briony Sloper, a manager for trauma and emergency medicine at King’s College Hospital, was nominated by fellow members of staff to participate in the relay.

The 42-year-old said she was “absolutely thrilled to be carrying the torch”.

She said: “It is a fantastic honour and one I will remember for the rest of my life. I have lived in Streatham for more than 12 years and to carry it near my home makes it even more special.”

Also running is 14-year-old Zoe Jones, the youngest torchbearer in Lambeth, who is an active member of the Amnesty International Club at Burntwood School in Tooting.

She will be joined by Caroline Hopkins, 28, and Cameron Fraser, 33, whose charity work is devoted to children and young people.
