A library that has been closed for a year after thieves stole copper from the roof may become the new home for an independent cinema.

Film buffs are in talks with the council about plans to install a screen in Nettlefold Hall, which adjoins West Norwood library in Norwood High Street.

The library, which is in a state of disrepair, has been shut since last June after a spate of copper thefts.

But campaigners hope it will be revamped following a public consultation on Lambeth’s libraries, which is due to report back on July 9.

Knight’s Hill councillor Jane Pickard said: “Everyone here is keen to see the shopping centre improved and have more places to go out in the evenings.

“A cinema, which perhaps includes a cafe or bar, could make a big difference to West Norwood.”

Residents are being invited to give their views on the cinema proposals by emailing Councillor Mike Smith at msmith10@lambeth.gov.uk.
