LETTER: Will High Road makeover be enough?

In response to your article (Businesses bid for funds to improve the High Road, June 14), I wonder whether brightening up Streatham High Road is sufficient to encourage visitors and locals alike to frequent for shopping.

When we came to Streatham in 1947 (we still live in the same house), there were three department stores, Tyrells, Pratts and Showmans, several men’s outfitters and ladies dress shops.

We also had a Woolworths and Littlewoods as well as Boots and WH Smiths, and interesting jewellery and luxury goods.

There were also two cinemas and a theatre as well as a dance hall.

Now all this seems history to us, but without all those interests, Streatham has fallen into the sadness you define.

Personally at the age of 92 I feel very frustrated to have to go to Croydon, Brixton or Tooting for a reel of cotton.
