A popular windmill which was given a half a million pound makeover by an army of volunteers has received a prestigious award.
The Brixton Windmill in Blenheim Gardens won the Museum and Heritage Award for conservation and restoration on May 16.
Members of the Friends of Windmill Gardens worked to redevelop the Grade II listed building following a £452,830 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Lambeth Council.
Hundreds of hours of voluntary work, valued at an additional £126,000, saw the windmill transformed for community use.
Jean Kerrigan, Chair of Friends of Windmill Gardens said: “This award is a real testament to what a committed community group can do.
“It is now a well-known and popular local landmark and our next goal will be to create a beautiful park around it for everyone to enjoy.”
