Skateboarders descend on new £163,000 Clapham Common skatepark

An army of skateboarders descended on Clapham Common at the weekend for the opening of a £163,000 skatepark.

Work began on the brand new park after local skateboarders and Lambeth Council got together to develop the plans - with the layout designed by the skaters themselves.

Skaters have an array of rails, quarter pipes and jumps to perform tricks such kick-flips, ollys, slides and grinds.

The park, funded jointly by Lambeth Council, the London Marathon Charitable Trust and Tesco, has been built by specialists Freestyle Skateparks Limited.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, council spokeswoman for culture, sport and the 2012 games, said: “We’ve worked closely with skate park users and the Friends of Clapham Common throughout to make sure the design and specification of the park are what users themselves want.

“This is going to give young people access to some of the best skate facilities in London and I’m delighted to see the project coming to fruition because lots of people have worked very hard to make it happen, including the skateboarders and skaters themselves."
