The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visited shoppers and traders at Brixton market on Wednesday, July 21.
The royal visit drew large crowds who clammered to get a glimpse of the prince and his wife Camilla as they made their way around the historic market, as part of a visit to support the regeneration of the area.
The royal couple spent some of the local currency, the Brixton Pound, and visited Raleigh Hall, the site of the planned Black Cultural Archives, which will become a national home for black history, culture and heritage.
Maureen Bedford was doing her daily shop in the market when Prince Charles approached her.
She said: “Charles said ‘Hello’, and so did Camilla.I managed to say ‘Hello’, but I was gobsmacked. I could hardly get the words out. It was great to see them.”
It was the second time Prince Charles had visited Brixton, having previously visited with Nelson Mandela in 1996.
