A trading standards operation targeting shops selling knives in the borough found almost half illegally sold blades to a 15-year-old.

The operation carried out during the school summer holiday found 11 shops out of 23 visited sold a knife to a volunteer teenager in Lambeth.

All the shops concerned have been formally cautioned and reported to the police by Lambeth Council.

A repeat operation will be carried out this Autumn to crack down on the illegal sale of knives to people under the age of 18.

Councillor Sally Prentice, cabinet member for environment, said: “A mail shot will be sent to all shops in the borough selling knives or other bladed instruments reminding them of the law and that the council will have a zero tolerance attitude for those caught selling knives to under 18s.”
