Forecasters predict the sun will struggle to break through fog and low cloud in south London and Surrey today.

As the south east wakes up to more widespread mist and low cloud, with areas of fog, the Met Office predicts some sunny spells may come as the day progresses.

A forecaster said: "Some warm sunny periods may eventually develop, with western areas perhaps favoured."

He said temperatures would reach a maximum of 13C.

And things would not improve this evening, he added.

"Any clear skies around at first will steadily fill in, as a mixture of mist, low cloud and fog reforms," the forecaster warned.

Temperatures were set to drop to around 5C overnight, he said.

Tomorrow though, could see more sunshine after another overcast start to the day, with temperatures hitting around 15C.

The forecaster said: "Another dull and generally overcast start, then gradually becoming brighter as the cloud lifts and breaks.

"Sunny periods will develop, especially in the afternoon. Feeling warm with the sunshine."
