School places website failure leaves thousands seeking answers

A technological collapse in New Malden has left thousands of London and Surrey parents in the dark about their child’s school place this morning.

Pan London Coordinated Admissions Scheme, a website where residents from Surrey and the 33 London boroughs can check school places, had been unavailable from about 7am.

But it is understood the system was restored at 11.46am.

Dawn Spragg, a Wimbledon parent and school governor, has been waiting since 5am to find out whether her 10-year-old daughter got one of her preferred places.

She said: “I am appalled at the state of affairs. There was a problem last year with the system crashing so how any excuse can be made for this year is beyond me.

“I have had so many text messages my phone is in meltdown. The stress on parents and children alike is overwhelming.

“This is the final straw. Heads should definitely roll for this. Whatever happened to education, education, education?”

Malcolm Greenaway, a former IT engineer, said he was “disgusted” that the fault should prolong an already anxious wait for many parents.

He said: “I think it’s absolutely disgusting that the Government doesn’t take control of this process. The government should be running this, not a charity.”

The London Grid for Learning Trust, a charity based in the CI Tower in New Malden High Street, commissioned Atomwide Plc to maintain the website on its behalf. Both have refused to comment about the malfunction.

A spokeswoman for London Councils said: “At the moment we are working to find out the information from the company which maintains the website.”

A notice on Surrey County Council’s website read: “Due to technical difficulties Pan London is currently unavailable March 2, 2010. We are liaising with the site provider to keep you informed. We will update this page as soon as we are notified of any changes to the current situation.”

Atomwide Plc said an urgent investigation was under way.

A huge let down. My daughter and I were looking forward to logging on first thing this morning to find out her new school. Good old postie has arrived now with the news! Got first choice hurrah :-)

Nothing new in this fantastic computerised system going wrong. 2 years ago results available the night before they were meant to be with some showing no school given but when postie came they had in fact got their first choice after an awfully angst ridden day for the poor children involved. Nobody seems particularly willing to take the blame either, how much does this ineffective computerised programme cost the tax payer I wonder?

My daughter went to school this morning very upset along with the majority of her class mates. I had been trying to log on to the web site from 6.30am. The stress is bad enough for parents let alone what it did to alll the boys and girls in year 6. I dont suppose we will be given the truth!!!!

I don't see the problem. It doesn't disadvantage anyone, and everyone should receive their letters today or tomorrow. Anything that is there to help parents is always the first thing to be criticized when there is a glitch. Everyone without a computer has to wait for their letter - why can't you?

i agree with the above.

remove the website if people are going to be ungrateful when it goes wrong.

websites can be brought down by excess bandwidth ie too many people logging on.

its difficult to host a website that will get a massive amount of hits on just one day. because you would have to pay for a very large bandwidth amount that will cope with it. yet the rest of the year it wouldnt be used and a waste of money.

i'm sure if the website in question asked parents for money so they they could have their results early everyone would throw their arms up in disgust just at the thought of it.

look at the bigger picture. maybe your kids might learn how the world works. you dont get something for nothing.
