Lift off for school rocket challenge

Young scientists launched home-made rockets during a watery engineering challenge last week.

Students from Bishop Wand CofE School in Sunbury were among the youngsters who visited the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington on Wednesday, June 25, for the Water Rocket Challenge.

Three teams represented the Laytons Road school at the annual event which saw teams try to keep rockets made from plastic bottles and powered by a water-based launch mechanism in the air for as long as possible.

Hydroforce, a team of six year nine pupils took part in the afternoon pitching their technology against 35 other teams from across the UK.

Then followed the evening session, which was open to all ages, and team Multimix and Andrew's Angels launched their creations.

The Angels were toppled in the third round but made it to the awards platform to collect a gong for sartorial elegance.
