Richmond dog poo campaign scoops required signatures

A campaign against carelessly discarded dog poo has clearly struck a chord with residents.

The Richmond Dog Fouling Campaign reported 1,375 signatures on its petition, which calls for a zero tolerance policy to the littering of dog faeces or dog litter bags.

The petition being submitted to Richmond Council on Tuesday, July 3, after the group collected the 1,000 signatures needed to trigger a debate about the issue at full council.

Organisers of the Richmond Dog Fouling Campaign expressed thanks to all those who signed the petition and welcomed residents to attend the meeting on July 3, where they will present the petition to full council at 7pm in Twickenham’s York House.

I think 6 is absurdly generous. Walking though Ham Woods last week I saw a woman with three greyhounds, all loose, and one was so far behind that she was unaware of the mess it left. These people have had it too good for too long. All dogs on short leads in public places please.

I think it is unbelievable that it is allowed for dogs to foul anywhere. Why can't owners put something down so that it can be cleared up 100%?

The Richmond Dog Fouling Campaign is delighted with the overwhelming support received for their campaign, which is calling for a zero tolerance policy against littering of dog litter bags and dog fouling in the Borough. A total of 1375 signatures, which far exceeds the required target, will be presented to the Council at their next meeting on Tuesday 3rd July. Residents are invited to attend the 7pm meeting at York House, Richmond Road, Twickenham TW1 3AA. In the meantime the group would like to thank all it's supporters for their efforts in helping to achieve this first crucial step towards the goal of making Richmond a more pleasant environment in which to live, work and study. We have proved that dog fouling is a hugely important issue for residents from all walks of life.. people were literally grabbing the pen in order to sign the petition and most had a story to tell about the menace caused by the negligence of a small minority of people who fail to clear up after their dogs. We hope that the Council will take this seriously and make steps to improve the lives of residents across the Borough.

I agree that dog owners should not only pick up their dog's mess but also deposit the poo bags in a designated bin and not leave them by trees or on the ground.

I would like to also see a ban on humans defecating and urinating in public. The former is often "sniffed out" by my dog and the latter is a regular occurance before, during and after Rugby matches, often in residents gardens and porches.

Disgusting.

The reality is, there are not enough police officers to patrol, issue fines or to do the lengthy paperwork involved, so I can't see how a petition will bring about any changes. The only way is to photograph culprets and publically "name and shame". Although, that's probably against their human or canine rights.

Where on earth is your dog sniffing out human poo?

After 30 years of being kept off the site the old swimming pool site in Twickenham is converted into a public park, opened by Princess Alexandra and visited by nearly 3000 people and what story does the Rich and Twick give us - dog poo!!! Rumour has it that they didn't even send a reporter or photographer to cover the event. Let's hope they prove this rumour wrong by making their front page a celebration of the community's achievements after decades of battles.
