Shoppers in Kew can look forward to the arrival of a new community market next month, after a trial period for an array of independent stalls was agreed.

Kew Village Community Market is set to take over the area around Kew Gardens station on the first Sunday of every month for three months, starting from October 2, following a call from residents to see an independent open air market cultivated in the heart of the community.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, cabinet member for communities, business and culture, was pleased residents and councillors alike had taken the initiative to get the Kew Village Community Market up and running.

She said: “This is another exciting attraction for local people.

“I understand that the organisers are in the process of applying for a licence in advance of their first day’s trading in early October and, in principle, we would support it. I wish them every success and I hope a good number of stallholders come forward to support the market.”

Calls for a community market came following the results of an independent questionnaire, sent to 5,500 Kew households, which showed residents were in favour of setting up a market in the village.

The idea was flagged up with Richmond Council for consideration and a trial of three months was subsequently agreed.

A blog was set up to help promote awareness of the market and encourage potential stallholders to sign up. It said organisers hoped the market could become a bustling community hub and a permanent fixture.

It reads: “A great deal of the success of the market will depend upon people attending the market to support their local businesses and charities.

“The market will be a mixture of between 15 and 25 food and craft stalls with a couple of charity stalls. Most stalls will represent local businesses and be run by people from the local community.”

The first market will be held between 10am and 2pm on Sunday, October 2, and applications for running a stall close on Monday, September 5.

Further trial markets are planned for Sunday, November 6, and Sunday, December 4.
