3:50pm Wednesday 26th May 2010 in Richmond By Christine Fleming
As Ham House’s 400th birthday celebrations continued at the weekend the students of St Mary’s got involved to show their support - by helping to organise a big party.
And the drama students from the university, who spent months putting together Sunday’s event as part of their course’s drama in the community module, were delighted when more than 2,500 people flocked to the historic house to join in with the festivities.
The programme of events included a procession of community groups along Ham Village’s historic avenues and into the gardens, the presentation of Ham House’s 400th member with lifetime national trust membership, and an evening of music in the grounds which drew crowds of picnickers keen to make the most of the good weather and free entertainment.
With 20 community and school choral groups and choirs on hand singing everything from classic gospel to contemporary pop, and even a rendition of happy birthday, the celebrations were full of community spirit and saw the house celebrate it’s 400th year in style.
