Heathrow decision could be delayed again

The decision on plans to expand Heathrow could be delayed again.

A decision was expected this week but sources suggest it could be delayed again while ministers try to win over backbenchers.

The Government was due to rule on the plans last month but Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon postponed the decision until after Christmas saying there were views which needed "proper consideration".

Up to 40 Labour backbenchers have openly spoken of their opposition to the plans to build a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow.

The airport industry and business leaders have urged the Government to push ahead with expansion saying it was vital for the economy and to enable London to compete with other cities.

Supporters have also suggested work on a new runway could create up to 65,000 jobs.
