A Teddington school choir has beaten tuneful competition from rival pupils in a festival of song.

Collis Primary School’s choir - directed by Clare Habershon - beat four other groups on November 12 in the finals of the VOX Festival of Song at Landmark Arts Centre, Ferry Road, Teddington.

Kew’s Unicorn School were runners up under their director Rebecca Gresson, while the three remaining finalists were Hampton Hill Junior School Boys’ Choir, Mall School Chamber Choir and Stanley Junior School Choir.

The final was judged by composer Howard Goodall, most famours for creating the themes to TV shows Red Drawf, Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder.

Mr Goodall explained he had been very impressed by the high standard and praised the winners for their dynamic range and quality of storytelling through song.

Lesley Bossine, arts centre manager at the Landmark, said: “It has been a great privilege to develop and host this very special competition and we are so grateful to all the schools who have taken part with such enthusiasm.

“It is clear that singing - especially collective singing - has a great capacity to involve and enthuse.

“The kind of engagement and the uplift in spirits it engenders among its participants and audiences has always been at the core of the Landmark Arts Centre’s objectives. Because we have been entrusted with a magnificent building so suited to choral music we believe we have a real role to play in stimulating and supporting school choral music wherever it is to be found in the Borough.

"We are particularly grateful to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, The Gosling Foundation and Awards for All who have supported this Festival.”
