Libraries across Richmond will be celebrating a classic children’s book creation from this weekend.

National Elmer Day on Saturday (May 27) will be marked with fun activities for youngsters from Saturday until Thursday (June 1), including storytimes where little ones are invited to join in by dressing in their brightest colours.

There will be stories, games (including a Hunt Elmer and His Friends) and craft activities where children can make their own pair of Elmer ears.

The day celebrates Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, which was created by author David McKee.

Richmond Council’s assistant director of contacts and leisure Ishbel Murray said: “Elmer is a children’s tale of friendship and individuality. These events are aimed at young children – to help them understand and appreciate diversity in their community.”
