Zac Goldsmith has reiterated his opposition to Heathrow expansion - putting him at odds with the Tory manifesto.

The Conservative party has committed to investing in the Heathrow expansion as part of their 2017 General Election Manifesto.

Prime Minister Theresa May released her party’s manifesto - Forward, Together - on May 18 featuring the airport expansion as part of their £40 million pledge to improving the UK’s transport.

Zac Goldsmith, who has been reselected to stand as the Tory MP for Richmond Park, resigned from the party in October in protest over this issue.

The MP has said: “Anyone who cares about the third runway knows that if I am returned to Parliament, I will continue to lead the fight and am best placed to win the arguments.”

In line with the Richmond Heathrow Campaign – a joint initiative of the Richmond Society, Friend of Richmond Green and The Kew Society – the Tory continues to fight to prevent any more problems for the constituents of Richmond Park.

“I don’t think any politician from any party has done more to fight Heathrow expansion,” Goldsmith added.

“That’s why Heathrow cheered when I lost to the Lib Dems, and why the anti-Heathrow expansion campaign groups back me.”

Sarah Olney, Liberal Democrat candidate for Richmond Park, is another critic for the Heathrow expansion and will stand by her party’s manifesto.

The Lib Dem said: “The Tories have cemented their commitment to building the third runway at Heathrow in this manifesto, ignoring the warnings from health organisations across Europe and the plights of people living in the surrounding areas.

“Theresa May has no idea how much this will cost or how they will keep air quality within the legal limits but is determined to push this through to appease big businesses in the wake of the plummeting pound.”
