There will be extra police officers on patrol in the borough today as Richmond’s top police officer moved to reassure residents after yesterday’s Westminster terror attack.

Officers will patrol in pairs, wearing hi-vis jackets, at transport hubs and “busy areas”, although borough commander Parm Sandhu said there is no indication Richmond is under threat.

She said: “Just to reassure local communities there will be extra presence today. Residents will see officers in pairs in hi-vis jackets. We want our community to feel safe.

“They will mainly be at our transport hubs and busy areas, because that is where officers will find the most people, and we would encourage people to engage with them.

“We want them to know we are standing together in light of the tragedy yesterday.

“But I would encourage people to report any suspicious activity to us by calling in.”

Three people were killed – along with the assailant – and another 29 were injured after a terror attack in Westminster yesterday.

Police officer Keith Palmer and Aysha Frade, who worked at a college near to Westminster Bridge, were among the fatalities.

The Metropolitan Police said a man in his mid-50s also died, but no further details have been given.

Seven were arrested and six properties across the country were raided last night in connection with the attack, the Metropolitan Police’s senior anti-terror officer has confirmed.

The arrests and raids took place in London, Birmingham and elsewhere in the UK.

But chief superintendent Sandhu said no raids or arrests had happened in Richmond-upon-Thames, and that there is nothing to suggest an attack in the borough is likely.
